6 Summer Skin Care Tips to Live By

Now more than ever, we’ve earned plenty of fun in the sun this summer. And whether that means trips to the beach, time outdoors in the warm sunshine, and/or sipping on refreshing drinks poolside, it can also prove to be a danger zone time for your skin. Warm weather brings many new skincare challenges that require you to switch up your routine and put a fresh face towards summer. If you’re someone who manages to keep their skin clear all winter, only to have it feel dry and worn during the summer, our Kate Somerville Skin Health Experts are here to help.

To improve your summer skin regimen and keep your face looking as healthy as ever, keep scrolling for our favorite summertime skincare tips and tricks.

#1 Lighten up your Skincare Routine

Harsh winter weather requires the use of heavier skincare products designed to protect your skin from environmental irritants like cold temperatures, wind, and rain. In the summer, your skincare routine requires products that aren’t as heavy to avoid clogging pores or causing greasiness. Instead of packing on a thick moisturizer, the heat and humidity of summer call for lighter oil-free moisturizers. While you don’t want to skip moisturizing altogether, using a light moisturizer like Kate Somerville Oil Free Moisturizer will give your skin space to breathe (and sweat) without leaving behind an oily residue or prompting unnecessary breakouts from clogged pores. Additionally, just as you’ll want to ditch the heavy moisturizers, you’ll also want to swap out heavy cleansers for light, foaming cleansers including ExfoliKate® Cleanser Daily Foaming Wash or EradiKate® Daily Foaming Cleanser. Doing so will ensure that your face remains clean without stripping it of its natural oils.

#2 Keep it Non-Comedogenic

In addition to lightening up your skincare routine, try using products that are non-comedogenic, which are specially formulated to not clog pores. The hot summer weather can leave your skin a bit sweaty by the end of the day, and because of this, you may find that your pores get clogged more frequently. Using lightweight makeup products that have been formulated without pore-clogging ingredients can help minimize pimples and reduce the chance of severe breakouts. For a summer-friendly regimen, check your makeup products and use those labeled light and non-comedogenic. Products like oil-free primers and moisturizers, powder or spray-on sunscreen, or a lightweight foundation are just a few of the many options to choose from.

#3 Use a Vitamin C Serum

Incorporating vitamin c serum into your summer skincare routine is great for maintaining healthy-looking skin. While vitamin c is an excellent product to use year-round, it’s vital in the summer. Vitamin c serums like the Kx Active Concentrates Vitamin B3 + Vitamin C serum are formulated with active ingredients to combat the harsh summer sun and protect your skin against damage [1]. Our Skin Health Experts recommend applying vitamin c serum during both your day and nighttime routine to improve tone, texture, and visibly improve the appearance of fine lines.

#4 Stay in the Shade When Possible

This rule doesn’t solely apply to the days following a resurfacing peel treatment. While the sun may feel great on your skin, too much sun exposure can be highly damaging. To protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays, always wear sun-protective clothing and try to stay in the shade when you can. While we don’t expect you to cover up completely, there are several ways you can effectively and fashionably protect your skin. Summertime umbrellas, wide-brimmed hats, and avoiding direct sun sunlight by seeking shade are all ways that you can protect your skin and prevent premature aging.

#5 Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Staying hydrated is crucial to your skin’s health, especially in the summer months. Warmer temperatures can cause your body to sweat and potentially burn. To provide protection for your skin and help it recover at the same time, try to drink at least eight glasses of water each day. Hydrating your skin from the inside out will keep your skin looking fresh no matter what time of year it is. You can also hydrate skin from the outside in by using products with hyaluronic acid that deliver instant and lasting hydration to summer skin.

#6 Always Apply SPF

The most fundamental rule of your summer skincare routine is to always wear sunscreen. Applying sunscreen to your entire body, especially your face, can protect your skin from ultraviolet rays associated with premature aging and skin cancer [2]. When applying sunscreen, be sure to check the directions on the sunscreen bottle you are using. Most SPF requires you to re-apply every two hours when outdoors for optimal sun protection. Additionally, swimming and sweating may also reduce the effectiveness of SPF, and you will need to re-apply sooner than anticipated. If you’re going to spend a day under the summer sun, be sure to pack a sunscreen like HydraKate Illuminating SPF 50+ Drops and set an alarm reminding you when to re-apply. For an easy, no-fuss way to protect your skin, try our SPF setting spray with SPF 50 that provides both UV protection and makeup-setting power. When developing a seasonal skincare routine, use the summer skincare tips above and note what works best for your skin type. As with anything new, your skincare regimen may require a bit of time before you notice a difference. Be sure to use quality skin care products and stick with them for at least a couple of weeks before determining their effectiveness.
